General Properties

Silicone Sponge is a cellular silicone material with a closed cell smooth outer surface that is particularly suited to demanding temperature applications that require a soft compressible material.

Silicone sponge components offer excellent thermal stability in the most exacting of applications. It has the ability to withstand extreme temperatures from -50°C up to +250°C. It has unrivalled reliability in sealing, cushioning, vibration dampening, insulation, and many more applications.

Our PremSil Silicone Sponge range includes a variety of grades and densities, offering perfect solutions for a wealth of applications.

Silicone Vs. Rubber

Not sure if silicone is right for you? Look no further!

As a man-made polymer, silicone, whilst still a rubber, is better referred to as a synthetic rubber or elastomer. It is engineered to give a variety of benefits over more conventional elastomers and rubbers.

  • Silicone’s extreme temperature resistance means it out performs and out-lives most other elastomers
  • Where other rubbers will crack, break or become brittle in harsh environments, silicone’s excellent resistance to UV, Ozone and weathering means it is the product of choice to meet these issues head-on
  • As a great insulator, silicone can and is used in many thermal insulation applications where other rubbers would fail
  • As a sponge, it is inherently more cost effective when compared to solid silicones or other rubbers.

Silicone Sponge Cord

We pride ourselves on manufacturing products which are inert and reliable under extreme temperatures, with thermal stability one of the key features of our range. Our silicone sponge cord, then, is certainly no exception to the rule!  With excellent resistance against weathering such as ozone and UV, our cord has a low compression set typically less than 15%, and on top of that also provides a significant cost reduction as opposed to silicone rubber. This makes our product perfect for industrial sealing applications in the form of cord.

Our silicone sponge cord is made to our exacting tolerances and has a vast range of uses and is particularly suited to sealing applications.

The cord can be supplied in coils, spooled, specified cut lengths or fabricated into vulcanized rings. Standard cord sizes range from 1mm to 110mm.

PremSil Silicone Sponge Cord is available in four standard grades; P10, P16, P24 and P33 – please see our datasheet below. As part of our Premium Service we can additionally offer tailored and specialist grades.

We provide a range of standard colours, black, red iron oxide, red, white, and grey and also offer colour matching based on your RAL, or other colour references. Why not ask a member of our team for more information?

Silicone Sponge Gaskets

Much like silicone rubber, which is often used for gaskets and seals, silicone sponge has an excellent ability to bear high temperatures that would otherwise cause a material to contract and expand. Our product has a significant threshold of thermal stability, remaining completely robust in temperatures from -50°C up to 250°C (+280°C with our High-Temperature grades), and it’s for exactly that reason that it sees an ideal use within industrial applications. When combined with a low compression set of less than 15%, resistance to all kinds of weathering, and a noticeably lower price, it isn’t too difficult to see the benefits of silicone sponge gaskets and seals as opposed to its alternatives.

It is also flexible, able to act as washers and sleeves in a wide variety of situations if the need calls for it. Like all our silicone products, gaskets, and seals, the key to the sponge’s thermal properties lie with its combination of a fine cellular structure encased within a smooth closed cell outer skin

We can also vulcanize (glue and joint) gaskets from our in-house facility, meaning your product is managed every step of the way, from start to finish.

We offer a standard range of colours and densities and, as with all our products, we can colour match and adjust our densities to suit your needs specifically.

Our punched gaskets produced from sheets can be tailored to customer requirements and punched to practically any shape and size.

FDA approved Silicone Sponge

Why Silicone is the ‘go to’ elastomer for the Food and Beverage Industry

Whilst there are several FDA approved elastomers on the market, silicone is certainly classed as the ‘go to’ for FDA requirements and it has many excellent properties to thank for that. P201F is our platinum cured FDA approved Silicone Sponge that has fantastic temperature resistance, withstanding extreme temperatures from -50°C to over 220°C, making it great for use in a wide range of applications within the industry. P201F FDA also has great chemical resistance to many chemicals and oils that are commonly present in areas where consumables may be handled or processed. Couple these properties with our sponge’s excellent elasticity, compression and flexibility and you have a reliable silicone sponge rubber which is great for repeated use in equipment, food processing and machinery. Naturally, a sponge offers an inherent cost saving and improved sealing properties over an equivalent rubber product.

FDA Vs. Food Safe or ‘FDA compliant’ – What’s the difference?

We are one of the very few manufacturers that can provide a full approved FDA silicone sponge. There is quite a lot of confusion surrounding compliance to FDA regulations and much of this confusion stems from the description of the product. The clear majority of FDA sponge products on the market are described as ‘compliant to FDA 21 CFR 177.2600’. This generally means that meets the extraction testing requirements. This does not mean it is fully FDA compliant or approved though.

So, what does it mean?

FDA 21 CFR section 177.2600 specifically refers to elastomers, such as silicone, and sets the general rules for rubber articles intended for repeated use in the food industry. Paragraphs A – D describe the regulations for Rubbers intended for repeated use and lists the ‘safe’ ingredients that may be used in the production of the product – this is sometimes referred to as the FDA Whitelist.

The article also outlines and emphasises the point of such rubbers being suitable for repeated use, meaning it shouldn’t harbour any contaminants just as it shouldn’t give them off. The product must, therefore, undergo extraction tests in water & n-hexane, outlined in paragraphs E & F, to show it meets the extraction limits set.

For the product to be fully compliant it must meet both these extraction limit requirements and only contain ingredients from FDA’s whitelist – this is where most products fall short. Many products are compliant to the extraction limits but contain ingredients that have not been permitted by FDA, such as peroxides, making them suitable for contact with foodstuffs (FoodSafe) but not FDA Approved.

How do you know you’re getting the right product?

It can be very hard to distinguish which it is you’re getting when placing orders with manufacturers. Which is why we take it upon ourselves to make sure our customers aren’t misled and know exactly what they’re getting every step of the way.

PremSil Products

At PremSil, we are proud to offer fully FDA Approved silicone sponge products, using only ingredients permitted and meeting the test requirements set in FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 alongside a range of FoodSafe products. This means no matter what your requirement is, you know you’re safe with us. Check the table to see available products for each grade.

The rules and regulations of FDA Approved silicones are found in FDA 21 CFR section 177.2600 (a direct link can be found below). Please feel free to contact us if you have any further queries. When asking for FDA silicone sponge please ensure that the product meets the requirements of the FDA extraction testing and only contains products on the FDA whitelist.
